    experiential learning options

As part of their Liberal Studies requirements, students are required to take one experiential learning course (4.0 quarter hours). This requirement does not have to be fulfilled in the student's major department, however the department of chemistry does offer several options for earning credit in chemistry while completing this requirement. These options are:

CHE 251 Laboratory Projects in Polymer Science
This course involves individual research projects, syntheses and characterizations of novel polymers. Experiential Learning. Prerequisite: CHE 175. Offered each spring.

Evaluation and assessment of student performance will be carried out by the instructor. CHE 251 contract (.pdf file)

    CHE 392 Internship in Chemistry
Experiential learning experience in a government agency, industrial firm, business, or nonprofit organization. Prerequisite: Junior status or permission. The internship contract must be signed by both the student and departmental internship advisor (selected by the student and agreed to by the advisor). Please file a copy of the signed contract with the chemistry chair.

Evaluation and assessment of student performance will be carried out by the faculty internship advisor and writing instructor. Internship contract (.pdf file)

    CHE 397 Research in Chemistry
Experimental exploration of a research topic. The student is expected to gain skills in laboratory techniques and procedures in pursuing answers to a research project. Prerequisite: consent. The research contract must be signed by both the student and departmental research advisor (selected by the student and agreed to by the advisor). Please file a copy of the signed contract with the chemistry chair (O'Connell 112). Research contract (PDF file)
