The mission of the Department of Chemistry is to educate students in the theory and ethical practice of chemistry within the framework of the scientific method, and to provide students with a context for appreciating the history of chemistry and its applications within society.
We offer both undergraduate (B.S. and B.A.) and graduate (M.S.) degrees, as well as a combined B.S./M.S. that is possible to complete in five years. Details about the chemistry curriculum can be accessed via the links under "Academic Programs" to the left. The undergraduate curriculum is based on the following eight learning outcomes:
| Undergraduate students who have earned the B.S. or B.A. degree in chemistry at DePaul will be able to: |
(1) |
comprehensively review and clearly communicate related published work in all five disciplines of chemistry: analytical, inorganic, organic, physical, and biochemistry; |
(2) |
design, carry out, record, analyze, and interpret the results of chemical experiments; |
(3) |
use modern instrumentation and classical techniques to design, carry out, record, analyze, and interpret their experiments; |
(4) |
provide clear rationale for independent statements and conclusions by using problem solving, critical thinking, and analytical reasoning skills; |
(5) |
use modern library searching and retrieval methods to obtain information about a topic related to chemistry; |
(6) |
pass safety tests and practice/implement standard safety procedures and regulations for safe handling and use of chemicals; |
(7) |
explain, both orally and in writing, their understanding of core chemical principles, the results of experiments, and their analysis of problems; |
(8) |
carry out all chemistry related tasks ethically which can include designing and carrying out experiments, recording and analyzing data, presenting and publishing scientific findings. |
The Department is housed in a state-of-the-art facility, equipped with a comprehensive list of modern analytical instrumentation, and its faculty are all research-active. Links to Faculty and research, along with instrumentation lists, and other resources are to the left.
